06 Jul Mounts Bay 2019
Mounts bay regatta, 6th July. A triangular course nestling in the picturesque bay between the mainland and St Michaels Mount. The clubs attending were predominantly those from Devon and Cornwall.
Avona pulled in many an admiring glance and wistful comment as once again her fine lines and immaculate presentation were duly noted . Sorry folks, still the boat getting all the attention.
The weather was on our side with beautiful sunshine, much appreciated slight breeze and almost mill pond conditions. With only seven Clifton team members in attendance, endurance was high on the skill set with races back to back and only a second heat to grab your breath.
A thrilling fourth place for the ladies in the B team race, we were very gratefully joined by Siobahn from Mounts Bay to make up the numbers.
Swiftly into the Mixed race, we had one less man than most crews and it proved a baptism of fire for our new Cox . Having gained a good position for the first of two tight bow side turns, another gig, over whom the marshals had declared we had water, steered into to us creating an almighty clattering of oars as the gap literally disappeared and bow side fought to find any water at all. Unfortunately inexperience on behalf of the Cox (ok me), resulted in a loss of ground at that point which the team strove valiantly to regain. A magnificent effort by all concerned , you only need to see the photos. The team regained some ground finishing in seventeenth place. A huge learning experience for the Cox. Never has sitting down holding a couple of pieces of rope been so exhilarating! Thank you crew for sticking in there and giving your absolute all.
A quick turn around to the Vets race. Joined now by long term friend of Clifton Gig Club Liz, again from Mounts Bay Club. Thank you once again to both Siobhan and Liz and Mounts Bay Club for their generosity. We were absolutely delighted to come in fourth. No mean feat as some clubs appeared to have some fresh rowers.
Huge thanks to Mounts Bay Club. A well run regatta, polished of with a most hospitable gathering in the evening. This is most definitely a date for the diary.
